August 2004 Newsletter - Issue No. 5

What is a personal concierge?

As the work-life balance debate increases we are hearing more and more ideas on how this issue can be addressed. Lifestyle Management or Personal Concierge services are places people are turning to for answers, and more importantly, to find more time.

But what exactly is a Personal Concierge, and how can you use their services in your day-to-day life?

This concept is addressed in my article below, and highlights the importance of getting to know your Personal Concierge and discovering how they can best suit your needs. As I am constantly saying, our services are only limited by your imagination! So fire up you imagination and find out how you can hand over your 'to do' list and find more time in your day.

we've done

Traditionally, the concierge was the guardian of the castle and ‘keeper of the keys’. The concierge was responsible for greeting and looking after guests and members of the household.

Today, this tradition of assisting and caring has been translated into the Personal Concierge, available not just to the residents of a castle, but to all who need assistance in their day-to-day lives.

The demands of today’s modern lifestyle means there is simply not enough time for us to do everything. There seems to be an ever-growing list of ‘things’ each of us must accomplish to ensure that we are happy and healthy. Health, fitness, family, relationships, career, home, finances….. How does one person or one family approach all these issues and still live the lifestyle you desire and deserve?

Expectations of how this is managed are slowly changing. In business we have been outsourcing tasks to increase profit and productivity for years. It is now becoming apparent that to function today, we need to look at outsourcing areas of our home and personal lives as well. This doesn’t simply mean getting a cleaner or an ironing person, although these are certainly great steps to take. There is now so much more you can achieve with the support of someone like a Personal Concierge.

You can involve a Personal Concierge as little or as much as you like in your life. You may contact a Personal Concierge to complete a one-off task, such as purchasing and delivering a special gift or sourcing a rare bottle of wine. Or, you may use the concierge for more regular tasks such as fortnightly grocery shopping. Then, there are those events that come up where suddenly you have a list of 101 things to do, such as a wedding or overseas holiday.

A Personal Concierge is happy to do those menial tasks such as folding invitations, paying your bills or making the phone calls to find the best insurance policy for you. All of these things take up your time - time that you could be spending on the more important things. And this is the purpose of a Personal Concierge – we want to give you your time back!

A Personal Concierge should make the effort to get to know you and your family. The more understanding they have of your needs, the better they will service you and the more time they can save you.

The Personal Concierge, after getting to know you, should be able to receive a phone call from you where you say, “I need food for 8 people for dinner tonight” and your concierge knows exactly what you like, which caterer you prefer and what wine is best for the evening.

By being able to anticipate what you might need, or your special likes and dislikes, the Personal Concierge will save you time and save you the effort of thinking and planning.

Take the time to get to know your Personal Concierge, and give them the opportunity to get to know you and your family. By developing this relationship, you will be better serviced, and discover a way to accomplish all those things you feel are important to create the lifestyle you deserve.
